Emergency responders were sent to the scene on the Bluegrass Parkway at approximately 11:00 p.m. on February 21. Police said the wreck occurred near the 13-mile marker when a vehicle was stopped in the westbound emergency lane.
One person was changing a tire on the car while another pedestrian, 20-year-old Amari Mays-Clark, a Frankfort resident, was standing near the car’s rear. A vehicle then crossed the fog line and struck both people and then continued driving. Mays-Clark died at the scene. The other victim was transported to the hospital with injuries. Kentucky State Police report the driver later turned himself in and was charged with vehicular homicide while under the influence as well as leaving the scene of a crash and assault. Police in Nelson County continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of Amari Mays-Clark. We also hope for the full recovery of the injured victim.
Kentucky Car Crashes
Car accidents happen constantly in Kentucky, with over 400 wrecks reported per day. Yearly, the state sees approximately 150,000 traffic accidents. A large portion of these crashes involve injuries and fatalities. Approximately 25,000 people are hurt per year in Kentucky auto accidents while over 700 end up losing their lives. Sadly, the majority of these accidents are caused by the actions of negligent drivers.
Negligent driving is the cause of more than 5 million auto accidents per year in the United States. Some of the most prevalent forms of negligent driving seen in America today include fatigue, speeding, intoxication, and distraction. When drivers behave negligently while behind the wheel, they risk their own lives and the lives of other drivers on the road.
When pedestrians are involved in auto accidents, they often suffer severe or even fatal injuries. Every year, over 7,000 pedestrians lose their lives in traffic collisions in the United States. Unfortunately, over half of reported pedestrian wrecks in the US are caused by the actions of negligent drivers.
